EDUCATION
I am committed to continuing to build the education system in Dare County by advocating for better resources, support for teachers, and accessible educational opportunities for all students. I am currently finishing my second term and eigth year on the Dare County Board of Education. I have served as a chairman, vice-chairman, and as a board member representing Hatteras Island.
HOUSING & HEALTH CARE
Housing is a critical issue in Dare County. I will work to address housing affordability, availability, and accessibility for all residents of Dare County. This isn't going to be a one size fits all solution. We are going to have to think outside the box and work together with the incorporated areas of Dare County to come up with solutions that work.
Living in a remote area limits our access to health care, we can do better. I feel it is incumbent upon the commissioners to step in and help to foster relationships and partnerships with our rural medical providers in order for our communities to have access to basic medical treatment.
FISHING
As the wife of a commercial fisherman, I understand the challenges facing the fishing industry. I have served on NCDMF Advisory boards and am currently a member of the SAMFC Advisory Panel. It's time to prioritize sustainable fishing practices and support for commercial, recreational, and charter/headboat fishermen.
STORM MITIGATION
Dare County faces the threat of severe weather events every year. I was recognized for my efforts after Hurricane Matthew and helped our neighboring county after Hurricane Dorian. I am currently working with Outer Banks Hazard Mitigation Planning team. I will focus on implementing effective storm mitigation strategies to protect the community and its residents both before and after a storm.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
I am dedicated to fostering diversity, inclusivity, transparency and community engagement. As a county commissioner, I will work to create a welcoming and supportive environment for all residents of Dare County. I am committed to revamping the current Parks & Recreation department. We need to start thinking outside the box to find new and innovative ways to support and engage community members of all ages.
PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT
Having owned a small business in Hatteras Village since 2000, I am committed to corresponding with local businesses, entrepreneurs, and community leaders to promote economic growth and development in Dare County. My eight years of service as a member of the Dare County Board of Education has allowed me the opportunity to see possibilities for Dare County residents of all ages to have access to new parks and recreation programs as well as access to classes on the COA Campus in Manteo.
